A HORSE SHOW

A Group show about horses? Awesome.

And suddenly it’s late. Night fills the room. The people are leaving.

And I think I’d like to go out, it is a Saturday night after all.

But Audrey Schmidt has a deadline: a show coming up and a piece needing attention. She asks that Coco Wisdom and I join her back at her studio at Princess Castle to keep her company. I am reluctant, but I am also a good friend. I do, however, ask for art supplies in exchange for my presence. Because after seeing all these horse pieces, I would like to paint my own horse.

As Audrey settles behind a massive easel, Coco and I sink into a worn leather couch in the studio common space, sort of the center of the studio universe. I hand her a small canvas provided by Audrey and tell her she must also make a horse. Those are the rules.

There are drinks, there are other things I won’t get into.

The night becomes messy and disorganized in the way most good nights do.

An hour or so later we are joined by Marely White, Logan White, and Olivia Bangham. Marley is busy and so she slips behind the ‘sails as curtains’ that divide her studio space from the common area. Logan and Olivia sit across from us and join.

It is now around 3am and we have a collection of horses. Our own horse show. A response show.

I call an uber home because it feels obnoxiously late. I roll down my window and I think about the night on the ride home. I think about how a response show might be an interesting idea for a real show. I think about how I had too much to drink.

And I think about horses.
